Part of the From Dirt Collection. 23 years of planting flowers as owner of a landscape company, now John is seeing them in a whole new way. For sure, we’re inspired by the light, the color, the feeling and the memories they evoke, but more importantly by the fact that they come FROM the DIRT. They start at nothing, their roots dig in, they grow and then they display their badass, God-given magic.

Makes Zero Sense and Perfect Sense at the Same Time

SOLD

Most of our work doesn’t just mean one thing but is packed with multiple layers of thoughts/memories/inspirations. Some connect to each other and some are just various commentary.

Each piece starts with a “jump-off” of visual inspiration and the goes through a of complex journey of development — both in thought and visual expression. The work is almost impossible to articulate in one sentence — especially since it is coming from two people — yes, we may look the same, but we have completely different thought patterns.

Here is just a partial list of thinking and inspiration for this piece::

It all started with the house. I was walking through town and grabbed a photo of it one day. I loved the size, the centeredness, the door, the porch, the gate, the attic vent, everything about it. It came to represent stability, humility, approachability, relatability and a bunch of other “…ility’s”.

Then, we built out from there to add memories, commentary, connections, experiences, questions. None, and all of which work together. For example, the Tootsie Pop is a reference to the delight of childhood but also asks the question, “how many licks?”. How many times can you get knocked down and get back up? How long before you catch a break or get discovered? How long do you have to struggle until you reach that chocolatey middle?

The flowers are inspired by our landscaping past and will forever be part of our work. Folks like flowers. So do we. They’re pretty. They bring joy. They can lift the spirit.

What about the gate? This is a touchy one. Sometimes, it feels as if there are gatekeepers in the artworld. It feels like you need to think a certain way, and if you don’t, you can’t come in. You need to have a CV. You need to enter contests, and win, for credibility. You need gallery representation. You need to be like this, and not like that. We pretty much say, we’ll just keep being ourselves.

So many other thoughts but that gives a snippet. Hopefully the ultimate take-away is hopeful and positive. Makes zero sense and perfect sense at the same time.

“Know that this piece of artwork is so much more than a painting.”

That right there sums up our hopes for every piece of work we do. Paint strokes that have a story — something more than the surface.

Our good friend Jack asked us to create a piece with the starting point being memories of his grandparents’ farm. We took lots of notes and worked in as many as we could and then added a few others.

A one-room red clapboard house flanked by a walnut tree on the edge of Love Bottom Valley with a cardinal keeping watch (the cardinal represents the beloved Beaver Denham, Jack’s wife, who passed away this year — she loved cardinals and every sighting is another remembrance that she is always with us).

Breaking Ground

The title painting that is part of the “Breaking Ground” collection which is our first series after deciding to put a hold on commissions. In this collection, we are focusing on letting all the things we love influence the work — drawing, painting, graphic design, flowers, landscaping, architecture, renovation, construction, deconstruction, experimentation, other artists, contrasts, abstract vs. real, geometric vs. loose, modern vs. tradition — all of it.

So many nuggets of info/memories wrapped up in this piece. Over a year ago, we were asked to create a piece as a surprise for a 50th birthday. It’s always a fun and interesting process to get to know more about folks when we create these works. Brian has 4 children, 4 dogs, has a large Hot Wheels collection, has a classic Pontiac Sunbird with lots of emotional capital invested in it, loves going to Disney/Magic Kingdom coaster riding with the family, is an Eagle Scout, and is building a house with a view. Heather is the better half, haha, who wanted to make sure Brian had something special to remember his 50th. He’s getting “up there”. And I can’t forget what John has dubbed “Kendahl Clouds” inspired by Kendahl, one of the daughters who drew a thank you card for John after she interviewed him for class.

We Chose Both

While the painting was inspired by a ride across the Ohio River on the Anderson Ferry, the title was inspired by a post Jeff had written about someone questioning our passion. We didn’t know whether to be pissed off or to dig deeper — so we chose to do both.

Under Construction

Part of the ‘Don’t Sand the Edges’ Collection:: Renovation has been a growing part of our lives the last couple years so we decided to merge construction materials (concrete, mesh joint tape, etc) into the work. The result is so much texture, depth and richness. Visually inspired by new horizons, this collection is also about hard work, knowing when to let go and finding beauty in imperfection.

More to Say

Not always sure how to articulate all the thoughts that go through our heads when we are working through our pieces. Sometimes it is just enjoying the process and making moves and color decisions on the fly. Sometimes it is walking down memory lane recalling the time while the kids were playing in the waterfall which this piece was inspired by. Sometimes it’s a mix of current mood and feelings smashed together with the mood and feelings from the past. It’s not always cut and dry and there is always more to say.

Forward Slash

The forward slash is a device used to show contrast or connection between two things. We kinda’ have this thing with contrasts. Our work tends to always have it. We like the tension of, say, abstract vs. real, nature vs. man-made, graphic vs. representational, modern vs. traditional. We are constantly exploring differences. We think it’s linked to the fact that we are twins and are totally different but yet alike in many ways.

The result is so much texture, depth and richness. Visually inspired by new horizons, this collection is also about hard work, knowing when to let go and finding beauty in imperfection.

Chance Encounters

SOLD

Part of the Backyard Fly-Bys Collection. One day i (Jeff) was sitting on my patio and a bird landed on a screwdriver i had laying around. It struck me as a weird contrast and was a spark of interest for me — so I created some work around it.

Cold Bud, Hot Day

A mix of scrap paper, a photo of my parents and grandparents along with graphics and other drawn and painted elements, this piece captures the nostalgia of a day in Devou park hanging out by a 58 Chevy and having a cold Bud which is the only beer gramps would drink. He was a Budweiser delivery driver and always had a Bud nearby.

The making of "Touch of Color" :: Just ONE example of our process :: Site visit to clients home to get a feel and ask questions to uncover nuggets of info :: clients direction was "we love thoroughbred horses but we don't want a typical horse painting" (Got ya' covered there, that's why you came to us) :: Jeff talks to John and then builds inspiration boards and a reference concept/composition :: In this case, the composition consists of about a dozen different pieces of imagery (for example, we wanted a specific position of the horse so we found a reference photo of a horse in a pose we liked, but we didn't like that horses expression, so we found a different head to use as reference and plunked it on the other horses body) :: Layered in fields from Kentucky, starting gate numbers, the clients home, Churchill Downs iconic steeples, Keeneland fences, leaves, etc :: Jeff shows John the concept :: John offers suggestions :: Jeff considers Johns suggestions and then provides John with all reference material :: John builds canvas to custom size :: John starts the process of painting and drawing and makes all the magic happen :: John shows Jeff progress and Jeff says "holy sh!t, I love it, what about doing this and this and this?" :: John says "thanks, I'll try that and that, but I'm not touching this or this" :: Jeff says "you do you" :: John does him and then shows Jeff again and Jeff again says "holy sh!t, I love it, now don't touch this and this and this, and John says "cool" and continues to build on what Jeff said NOT to touch :: This happens about 7 times until the painting is considered complete :: John builds custom frame :: Piece is signed on front, titled, dated, noted on back :: Painting is revealed to client :: Client gets chills and sometimes tears :: Piece is hung :: Client pays artists and says "it's worth every penny" :: Artists give extended hugs and gratitude to client for appreciating the passion, blood, sweat and tears :: Client has piece that will last forever and be passed down for generations :: Artists high five that they are able to continue to create.

What Elephant in the Room

Part of the Smalltown Soul Collection

Of the work we've done so far, this series was by far the most collaborative one yet. We had so many back and forths on everything from the concept through the final stages. We have been really wanting to do some work that explored people. One day the owner of Bircus Brewing stopped over the studio and mentioned if we'd want to temporarily hang some work at the brewery and we were like, "ok, that's cool." So that was kinda' the jump-off point. We chose to focus on the quaint, quirk and charm of Ludlow and the other business owners around us (plan is to keep this a running series so we can include more folks but we had to start somewhere --- Matt, Dru, Carus, Margie, Aleta, Jon, everyone, we're comin' for ya'). The concept focuses on hopes, dreams, hard work, independent spirit, faith, balancing, juggling, struggling, all of that.
